"Environs" at Capricious, New York Statement: Amelia
Bauer’s work is an exploration of present-day landscapes. Obsessively
crafted and intricately detailed, Bauer’s drawings and sculptures
organize forms from contemporary environments into repeating geometric
patterns in the tradition of the decorative arts. Scale is disregarded
and forms are placed together more intuitively than practically. These
are fictional worlds, but not all together impossible. The elements
are familiar but the arrangement is not. The photographs search for
a space somewhere between utopia and dystopia, haunting and ethereal,
setting the viewer and the rest of the work between worlds. ©2008 amelia bauer |
